Plastic offers more options for storing CDs. Cardboard boxes are generally just simple boxes, and while it is of course possible to find basic plastic CD storage boxes, plastic containers can also be quite elaborate. Many are intended to hold CDs without their jewel cases and allow for quick access to the individual CDs. A labeling system of some sort comes with some boxes as well. The most advanced storage boxes even have locking mechanisms to keep your CDs secure.

The storage capacity of plastic boxes can be quite large. Those that are for storing CDs without cases can sometimes hold up to 100 discs or more. These types of containers are especially useful for people who like to travel with their music collections and want to be able to access any CD quickly and easily. For more permanent storage solutions there are stackable CD storage cabinets with drawers. As a collection gets larger and larger, more cabinets can be added.

Metal CD Storage Boxes

The most impressive looking storage option for CDs is a metal case. These are of course the most sturdy and protective option as well, making them ideal for keeping discs safe during travel. You can find smaller metal cases for fewer than 20 discs, or larger cases for storing anywhere from 50 to 400 discs. Large metal cases tend to be some of the most expensive CD storage boxes you can find, but for someone who needs to be able to transport their collection easily and securely they can be the best choice.

Choosing the right box for you

The type of box you choose to store your CDs will depend on several factors. First, you have to consider the size of your CD collection, and whether it will be constantly increasing. Secondly, you have to decide if you want to store your CDs in sleeves or cases. Jewel cases are more protective, but sleeves allow for storing more discs in a single box. Alternatively, you could opt for one of the plastic containers that holds each CD individually. If you only have a small amount of floor space available, stackable CD storage boxes are worth considering. Something else to think about is how often you need to access your CDs. If you put all of your music on your computer or MP3 player and only need someplace to store the CDs for backup purposes, plain cardboard boxes make more sense than an expensive plastic or metal case.
