DVD Storage Boxes

Many people enjoy watching movies at home, and so many homes have a large collection of DVDs. In some cases a media cabinet or some other storage unit is used to house the collection as well as make the movies more accessible. However, there are a lot of cases in which a large storage unit for DVDs is not feasible or preferable. Some of the reasons can include space issues, the cost of such units, clashes with the room's décor, or feeling that so many DVDs in the room make it look cluttered. Whatever their reasons, there are a lot of homeowners who prefer to store their DVDs in more out of the way locations, or at least keep them hidden from view in boxes. While any sort of box will work for basic storage, if you are currently keeping your DVDs in shoeboxes shoved under a table you may want to think about upgrading to DVD storage boxes.

CD and DVD Storage Boxes

Many of the available CD storage boxes will also work for DVD storage. Any type of storage box that is meant for discs in sleeves or that holds the discs individually can obviously store both types of discs. The problem with these is that your DVDs are not as protected in a plastic sleeve as they are in their hard cases. Most of the CD boxes that are meant to hold jewel cases, however, are sized for CD cases and therefore are too small for DVD cases. Some, however, are built with both types of media in mind. If you are looking for more flexible storage options, search for CD DVD storage boxes that specifically list both types of media on the packaging. In some cases you may be able to store both CDs and DVDs in the same box, though if the box is not designed to accommodate both at the same time you may risk damaging one or the other if they shift around when the box is moved.

Basic DVD Storage Boxes

The two most popular materials for DVD storage are cardboard and plastic. For the cheapest DVD storage boxes, cardboard is usually the best choice. Cardboard storage boxes are easy to find and inexpensive enough to buy in bulk. They are usually white or black in color, which means they will coordinate with most decorating styles. Be sure to know the capacity of a box before you buy it, and know whether you are buying a box for DVDs in plastic sleeves, or in their cases. If keeping your DVDs in their cases is not a priority for you, you can buy smaller boxes for the same number of DVDs, but you will have to be a little more careful about handling the box so you do not scratch the discs.

For both cardboard and plastic DVD storage boxes, one option is to get a box that is short enough to keep under a sofa. That way your DVDs are hidden, but still easily accessible for movie watching. Whatever box you decide on, you should also label the box in some way so that you know what is in it without looking. This is especially important if you have more than one box, so you do not waste time opening each box when looking for a specific movie.

There are a variety of more decorative DVD storage options available if you do not think plain cardboard will suit your room's style very well. Some of these are boxes with lids, some have drawers, and others are open-top for the easiest access. Open-top boxes do especially well on shelves, so that the DVDs are still hidden from view but can easily be seen once you pull out the box.

Materials for decorative storage boxes vary, and besides plastic can include wood, bamboo, mesh, metal, and fabric, among others. The variety available makes it possible to find boxes for any sort of decorating style. These boxes tend to be more expensive than the more basic varieties, however, which means if you have an extensive DVD collection buying enough boxes for all of it can be a bit pricey. One possible compromise is to get just a couple nicer boxes for keeping the movies you watch most often, and storing the others in more basic boxes in a closet or under the sofa.
