Types of Storage Boxes

There are many, many different types of storage boxes available, to serve a variety of practical and decorating needs. There is such a variety, in fact, that at first an attempt at figuring out just what you need can be completely overwhelming. The first step in deciding what kind of storage box is right for your needs is to decide exactly what your needs are. Do you need boxes to hold everyday things, just to organize and clear up clutter? In that case, you’ll probably be looking for nicer boxes that look good on the shelves in your home. Or, are looking more for long-term storage, in the basement, attic, or garage? Sturdy, stackable boxes will probably work better in those situations. Further questions to ask include: What will I put in the boxes? Will I need a certain type of box in that case, such as a photo-storage box? What kind of material should the box be made of? Is plastic okay, or would metal or wood be preferable? Do I need storage boxes with lids? Here are some of the different types of boxes you can choose from, to give you an idea what you’re looking for.

Boxes are just one of several ways you can store those tons of old photos you probably have around your house. Designated photo storage boxes with lids should clearly state that they are acid-free, as acidic boxes can cause the photos to deteriorate over time. Boxes for storing photos come in varying sizes; while larger boxes obviously hold more photos, smaller boxes are better-suited for organizing, which makes it much easier to find that one particular photo when you need to. These boxes also come in many different colors, making it easy to match the decor of any room. Stackable photo storage boxes can be used in a closet or to save space in a room. Small, decorative storage boxes or larger decorative photo storage bins can turn a confusing mess of photos into a pleasant addition to your home, ready to pull out at a moment’s notice to show to family and friends.

CD Storage Boxes

CD storage options include boxes ranging from basic cardboard storage boxes to elaborate metal or plastic cases. You can find boxes for storing CDs in their jewel cases and without them. Boxes range in size from storing 10 CDs and up, while some cases can store hundreds of CDs at a time. Once again, the larger boxes and cases are good for pure storage, while smaller boxes are better for labeling and organizing. CD storage boxes and cases are generally black or grey, although some searching will yield other colors as well.

Shoe Storage Boxes

Shoe storage boxes have somewhat less variety available compared with many other types of storage boxes. They are generally small, rectangular, and made of clear plastic so that the contents are easily visible. These boxes are almost always stackable, and will be the right size for most shoes. Boots, platform shoes and other large types of shoes will probably not fit in a standard shoe storage box. If clear plastic isn’t really your style, however, there are other options, such as patterned fabric boxes with small see-through windows, so you can still see what’s inside. Also, while most shoe boxes open from the top, some are made to open from the front, making it easy to access shoes in the bottom box of a stack.

DVD Storage Boxes

DVD storage boxes, in many cases, are basically slightly larger CD storage boxes. They come in the same variety of sizes, materials, etc., although it is often easier to find patterned and brightly-colored boxes for DVDs than for CDs. While you can get these storage boxes with lids, there are also boxes available for DVDs that do not have either lids or fronts; these are meant for proving attractive storage space near a TV or entertainment center and allow easy access to DVDs, while taking up less space than a DVD stand might.

Wine storage boxes are typically made of corrugated cardboard and hold anywhere from one to 12 bottles. Many can also be used for shipping bottles of wine. Small boxes, made for one, two, or occasionally three bottles of wine are often made from wood or decorative cardboard, and are generally intended as gift boxes. A good wine storage box obviously must be quite sturdy, as the bottles will be heavy and must be prevented from hitting each other and breaking. Boxes intended for more than one bottle will have inserts to keep the bottles separate and upright during storage or shipping.

Christmas ornaments are often extremely fragile, so storing them can be tricky. Special Christmas ornament storage boxes are available to minimize the chance that important family ornaments could be broken. These boxes can be made of plastic or cardboard, and will consist of drawers or stackable, often locking layers. Each drawer or layer will be divided into several sections so each ornament has its own protected compartment. These boxes come in different sizes, and some can hold over 100 ornaments.
